Shrink Preview files without ruining image quality !

http://www.macworld.com/article/1168311/shrink_preview_files_without_ruining_....nl_newtomac_h_crawl

Savvy Preview users know they can do some interesting things to PDFs—convert them to black-and-white or sepia tone, increase or decrease their lightness, and more—by selecting File -> Export, then selecting one of the Quartz filters in the resulting dialog box. Reader zpjet is one of those users, but he was never satisfied with results of the Reduce File Size filter (which he'd use when trying to make PDFs small enough to send by e-mail): It made them too small and made the graphics fuzzy.

After a little digging around, he found that these filters are located in the folder /System/Library/Filters, and that they're XML files that are easily edited with TextEdit (or any other text editor). Examining the file for the Reduce File Size filter, he found out why it didn't work for him: Two of the parameters—Compression Quality and ImageSizeMax—were just too low (0.0 and 512, respectively).

So he copied this file to his Desktop, made two copies of it, and then renamed all three: Reduce File Size Good, Reduce File Size Better, and Reduce File Size Best. Then he changed the parameters of each file: 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 for Compression Quality (respectively) and 842, 1684, and 3508 for ImageSizeMax (ditto). (The first is A4-size at 72dpi, the second A4 at 144dpi, and the third A4 at 300dpi).

Finally, he changed the default string for the Name key at the end of each file—which is what displays in the Export menu—to match its file name. He then created a /Library/Filters folder and put all three edited files in it.

Now, when he opens a picture or PDF in Preview, he has the option of four Reduce File Size filters. So, for example, let's say he's starting with a JPEG of a scanned A4 invoice at 300dpi, and that file is 1.6MB in size. When he exports that to PDF format with the standard Reduce File Size filter, the file goes down to 27KB, but it's quite unusable—fuzzy and hard to read. Using the Good filter produces a file that is much easier to read and only slightly fuzzy, and it weighs in at 80KB. A file produced with the Better filter comes out at 420KB and clear; Best is 600KB and almost as good as the original.

Pentagon threatens lawsuit over Osama bin Laden book !

The former Navy SEAL who wrote about his part in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden was interviewed on "60 Minutes." The CBS news program disguised his face and altered his voice to protect his identity.

"He calls himself Mark Owen. That's not his real name. We've disguised him and will keep his name confidential for his own safety," begins the "60 Minutes" piece.

CBS used a professional makeup artist to render his true appearance unrecognizable, The Atlantic reported.

Mark Owen is the pen name of the author of  "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama bin Laden," a book that is getting some attention as it claims to offer a firsthand account of the raid on the al-Qaida chief's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. There are also reports that the book contradicts parts of the official version of events.

Owen, a former member of SEAL Team 6, was the second man in the room when bin Laden was shot and took photos of bin Laden's body that were never released, CBS notes.

Among the things Owen revealed to CBS' Scott Pelley:

  • There was a full-size model of the bin Laden complex, where he and the other members of the elite tactical team trained.
  • There was a dress rehearsal of the raid for military top brass, including Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and Adm. Eric Olson, head of Special Operations Command.
  • The team had a week off at Virginia Beach, Va., then trained one more time at the full-size model before heading off on their mission.
  • The book is not meant to be political. "You know, if these crazies on either side of the aisle want to make it political, shame on them," Owen said. "This is a book about Sept. 11th, and it needs to rest on Sept. 11th, not be brought into the political arena, because this ... this has nothing to do with politics."

While CBS chose not to identify the SEAL Team 6 member, some other media outlets have revealed his real name. CBS was clear in its online version of the story: "When word of the book was announced last week, a few news organizations discovered Mark Owen's real name and published it. As a result, he's a marked man

in hidingprobably for the rest of his life. We will not reveal his true name."

The interview will air on "60 Minutes"  on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. ET

About Wu Dang - The Lineage and Legacy

Mystical Mountains of Wu DangA Sacred Mountain...A Spiritual Home

For more than two thousand years, people have come to Wu Dang Mountain to withdraw from society and cultivate peacefulness in an endless stream of uplifting energy.  The magnificence of the surroundings and the positive and reposeful energies in the air have attracted some of the world's finest thinkers and spiritual guides.  All of the great practitioners of internal energy development have come to Wu Dang Mountain and made great and unique contributions to the Taoist discourse.

A Center for Taoist Thought and Practice

Wu Dan Mountain is the most important center for training in the internal martial arts and the healing arts (Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Liang Yi, and Wu Ji) in the world.  It is a physical and spiritual sanctuary where visitors, even from far away, feel that they have returned to their original nature.  The tranquil beauty of the landscape makes it an ideal environment for the cultivation of mind and spirit.  Over one hundred Taoist priests currently practice internal alchemy and inner spiritual development on Wu Dang Mountain.

The Great Mountain

Wu Dang Peak

Located about 500 miles west of Shanghai, Wu Dang Mountain (formally known as Xuan Yue) is one of the four most venerated mountains in China.

Wu Dang Mountain is actually a group of 72 peaks that tower over the Jianghann Plain.  Tianzhu, its magnificent peak, rises majestically into the clouds at an elevation of 5286 feet.

The Wu Dang MonasteryPalaces in the Wu Dang Monastery

The Wu Dang Monastery was built on the mountain during the Ming Dynasty (1386-1644).  The Emperor built the monastery and the Wu Dang Temple became the  personal temple and spiritual home of the imperial family.

Today, Wu Dang is the site of over 20,000 palaces and temples, arranged in 33 groups over an area with a circumference of 248 miles.

The complex contains nine palaces, eight temples, 36 convents, 72 cliff temples and more than 30 pavilions and bridges.  The vast complex is the world's largest Taoist center.  From the air the magnificent site resembles a dragon taking flight, full of power and mystery.

In 1983, the state decided to oped the Purple Heaven Hall (including the Golden Hall) of Wu Dang Mountain to the public.  There are currently more than twenty older Taoist priests and sixty younger priests practicing the development of their internal energy there.
