Senator Carl Levin calls for naval blockade of Iran !!

U.S. senator calls for naval blockade of Iran 10 Mar 2012 An international naval blockade of Iranian oil exports should be considered before any resort to air strikes against the country's disputed nuclear program, the chairman of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee said on Friday. "That's, I think, one option that needs to be considered" to boost pressure on Iran to curb its nuclear program in line with UN Security Council resolutions, Democratic Senator Carl Levin said in an interview taped for C-SPAN's "Newsmakers" program. Levin was responding to a question about possible ways of increasing pressure short of combat, including imposition of a "no-fly zone" over Iran.

But if you download a file on said massacre (think Bradley Manning), you're in solitary confinement for life. 'They hate us for our freedoms?' No, they hate us for our war crimes.--LRP]

US soldier opens fire on Afghan civilians 11 Mar 2012 A U.S. soldier went on a shooting rampage outside Kandahar city early Sunday, causing an unknown number of deaths and injuries, Afghan officials and the Western military said. The incident seemed certain to harden anti-American sentiment that flared into deadly riots last month after U.S. troops burned copies of the Koran at a base north of Kabul. The shooting early Sunday took place in Panjwayi district outside Kandahar city. The NATO force issued a terse statement saying the shooter was in custody and the incident would be 'investigated' by the U.S. military and Afghan authorities.

Rockets hit US-run Bagram Airbase 10 Mar 2012 Taliban militants have fired at least two rockets toward the Bagram Airbase, the main US base and largest detention facility in Afghanistan, Press TV reports. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the US base in a statement by their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, in which he said that a number of foreign soldiers were killed in the assault and the US airbase suffered damage.

UN rights rapporteur is US agent: Iran MP 10 Mar 2012 A senior lawmaker [Alaeddin Boroujerdi, who heads the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee] says Americans are the true assassins of Iranian nuclear scientists and UN Rights Rapporteur Ahmed Shaheed’s anti-Iran claims are a forward retreat aimed at covering up US crimes. A total of six Iranian scientists related to the country's nuclear energy program have been killed by the Israeli agents since January 2010. In the latest instance, Mostafa Ahmadi Moqaddam, deputy head of Natanz nuclear facility, was killed when a motorist stuck a bomb to his car in Tehran on January 11. Pointing to recent remarks by US Attorney General Eric Holder who defended the US government assassinating overseas American citizens suspected of involvement in terrorist activities against the United States, Boroujerdi said US officials who openly defend the assassination of American citizens, accuse Iran of supporting terrorism.

US military unveils non-lethal heat ray weapon --Weapon was deployed briefly in Afghanistan in 2010 11 Mar 2012 A sensation of unbearable, sudden heat seems to come out of nowhere -- this wave, a strong electromagnetic beam, is the latest non-lethal weapon unveiled by the US military this week. "You're not gonna see it, you're not gonna hear it, you're not gonna smell it: you're gonna feel it," explained US Marine Colonel Tracy Taffola, director the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate, Marine Corps Base Quantico, at a demonstration for members of the media. The effect is so repellant, the immediate instinct is to flee -- and quickly, as experienced by AFP at the presentation. Taffola added that the "Active Denial System" beam, while powerful and long-range, some 1000 meters (0.6 miles), is the military's "safest non-lethal capability" that has been developed over 15 years but never used in the field.

Army Suicides Up 80 Percent Since Iraq War Start 08 Mar 2012 The number of suicides in the U.S. Army rose by 80 percent after the United States launched the war on Iraq, American military doctors reported on Thursday. Japanese leaders silent on meltdown 11 Mar 2012 Just four hours after a tsunami swept into the Fukushima nuclear power plant a year ago, Japan's leaders knew the damage was so severe that the reactors could melt down, but they kept their knowledge secret for months. Five days into the crisis, then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan voiced his fears that it could turn worse than Chernobyl, newly released documents show. The minutes of the government's crisis management meetings from the day the earthquake and tsunami struck until late December were not recorded and had to be reconstructed retroactively. The minutes quoted an unidentified official explaining that cooling functions of the reactors were kept running only by batteries that would last just eight hours.

Fukushima radiation measured in Ireland 08 Mar 2012 Radioactivity from the Fukushima nuclear reactor accident in Japan reached Ireland in the weeks after the event. The radioactive particles that reached Ireland were similar to those arriving as nuclear fallout here after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986, according to data from the institute. The monitoring stations detected radioactive Iodine-131 and two forms of radioactive Caesium, Cs-137 and Cs-134.

Earthquake strikes Japan on eve of anniversary 10 Mar 2012 A moderate quake with a magnitude of 5.4 has struck northeastern Japan near the zone devastated last year by the massive earthquake and tsunami that triggered a nuclear crisis. Protesters link arms around the world to decry nuclear power 11 Mar 2012 Tens of thousands of anti-nuclear protesters across the globe called for an end to nuclear power as they marked the first anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami at Japan's Fukushima power plant. In Japan, tens of thousands rallied near the crippled plant, demanding an end to nuclear power. The tsunami swamped cooling systems at Fukushima and sent three reactors into meltdown, spewing radiation into the environment. Around 16,000 people gathered at a baseball stadium in Koriyama, some 60 kilometres (40 miles) from the plant. Participants called for an end to nuclear energy in Japan and compensation for victims from operator Tokyo Electric Power.

Fukushima rally to be held at San Onofre 11 Mar 2012 Dozens of Southern Californians will hold a rally to remember the meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan and to raise awareness about nuclear power in California. The gathering Sunday outside the gates of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in San Clemente will focus on what protesters say are dangers at the plant, which is located in southern Orange County. Southern California Edison took the San Onofre Unit 3 nuclear plant off-line last month as a precaution after detecting a leak in a tube that carries radioactive water in a steam generator. Subsequent investigation found unusual and premature wear on hundreds of similar tubes in Unit 2.

Anonymous Hackers Replace Police Supplier Website With 'Tribute to Jeremy Hammond' 09 Mar 2012 Anonymous hacktivists announced via Twitter that they had successfully hacked the website of New York Iron Works, a police-equipment supplier, and replaced the homepage with a tribute of love to arrested hacker and Chicagoan Jeremy Hammond. Anonymous also claimed responsibility for several other hacks on March 8, including knocking Peruvian government website offline, and posting the personal information of FBI agents in a public online message board in what they called "Operation Piggy Bank." The website for New York Iron Works is currently offline, but the homepage was used this morning by Anonymous to display their own message as well as a YouTube video showing the final minutes of cult-film "Fight Club," in which a group of American terrorists led by a schizophrenic protagonist played by Edward Norton/Brad Pitt blow up the headquarters of several banks. Anonymous also posted what appeared to be hundreds of usernames and passwords, suggesting that the hackers had not only taken control of the homepage, but accessed the website's servers. [Altogether, sounds like a productive #FFF!]
