End mountaintop removals

End mountaintop removal at Arch Coal with Green America

Since the 1970s, mountaintop removal (MTR) coal mining has reportedly destroyed wildlife habitat, poisoned water supplies and harmed communities throughout Appalachia. Additionally, health hazards suspected to be linked to the toxic byproducts of mountaintop removal include cancer and liver and kidney disease.

As concerned citizens, we are joining Green America in asking Arch Coal to stop mountaintop removal mining and support alternative sources of energy instead.

Dear Ms. Jennifer Beatty,

As concerned citizens, we stand against your company’s current policy regarding mountaintop removal coal mining. This mining technique has reportedly been found to destroy wildlife habitats, poison water supplies and harm communities near your site operations.

Your current practices potentially endanger public health and pollute local communities’ water supplies with chemicals, such as arsenic, mercury, lead, copper, selenium and chromium. For example, health hazards reportedly linked to the toxic byproducts of mountaintop removal include cancer and liver and kidney disease. The constant presence of mining debris, explosives and large refinery factories also potentially decrease the quality of life for the surrounding communities.

Arch Coal’s mining methods are potentially dangerous. We urge your company to discontinue mountaintop removal, for the safety of our families, friends and environment. I intend to seek out alternative electricity providers and encourage fellow Moxy Vote users that are Arch Coal shareholders to penalize the board of directors if this issue is not addressed to our satisfaction.

Please keep us posted on your efforts through Moxy Vote.

Sincerely,
