Number of self-immolations in Tibet rises above 100 !

Le français suit l'anglais Tibet’s Minister of Information and International Relations visits Quebec During a short visit to Montreal in February, Kalon (Minister) Dicki Chhoyang of the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala, India, held a press conference for Quebec journalists. The press conference was co-organized by the Canada Tibet Committee and Amnesty International Canada/francophone section. Ms. Chhoyang discussed the escalating crisis of self-immolations in Tibet and shared her administration’s proposals to resolve the conflict. Kalon Chhoyang is a Tibetan Canadian raised in Montreal. She worked in Quebec, the United States, in Tibet and in China before being invited, in 2011, to serve in the Tibetan administration in exile as a Cabinet Minister. Her visit was a unique opportunity for Quebeckers to learn firsthand about the situation inside Tibet today. Number of self-immolations in Tibet rises above 100 Lobsang Namgyal, a 37-year old Tibetan monk from Ngaba's Kirti Monastery, became the 100th self-immolation protester living under China's rule when he set light to himself near the Dzoge Public Security Bureau on 3 February; he died at the scene. Due to the security clampdown in Tibet, this news only reached the outside world on 13 February, the same day that a young monk set light to himself in Nepal. The monk staged his protest near Kathmandu's Boudhanath Stupa on the third day of Losar (Tibetan New Year) and on the 100th anniversary of a proclamation by the 13th Dalai Lama, reasserting Tibet's independent status. Sadly, as we write this update, the number of self-immolations in Tibet has already climbed to 104.  What will it take before the world responds?  The Canada Tibet Committee is reaching out to our elected representatives in Ottawa by organizing a coordinated lobby day initiative (http://www.tibet.ca/en/newsroom/upcoming_events/193) and facilitating a hearing in Parliament. We have asked Prime Minister Stephen Harper to convene a government task force to determine what action Canada can take in support of the Tibetan people (http://www.tibet.ca/en/newsroom/news_releases/317).    Government of Canada expresses concern and support for Tibet On December 14, 2012 Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird issued a statement of concern (http://www.international.gc.ca/media/aff/news-communiques/2012/12/14b.aspx?view=d) about the rising number of self-immolations in Tibet.  In his statement, Mr. Baird called upon the Government of China to lift restrictions on access to Tibet for diplomats and journalists and to enter negotiations with representatives of the Dalai Lama. On February 8, 2013, Canada's Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, Jason Kenny, issued a public statement (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/media/statements/2013/2013-02-08.asp) recognizing Tibetan New Year and extending best wishes to the Dalai Lama. On February 14, 2013, MP David Sweet - Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet - made a statement in the House of Commons recalling the 13th Dalai Lama's proclamation of independence 100 years ago and reiterating Minister Baird's appeal to the Government of China to enter dialogue with representatives of the Dalai Lama (). Tibet's political leader, Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay, testifies in the Canadian Parliament The Canada Tibet Committee is pleased to host the visit to Ottawa of Tibet's political leader, Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay.  Dr. Sangay was elected as political leader of the Tibetan administration following the Dalai Lama's 2011 announcement that he wished to devolve his political power to an elected representative of the Tibetan people.  While in Ottawa, Dr. Sangay will testify before the Parliamentary Subcommittee on International Human Rights, which is currently undertaking a study on the causes and consequences of the self-immolation crisis inside Tibet.  Dr. Sangay will also meet with Canadian NGOs and media and he will attend a private reception for Canada Tibet Committee volunteers. Canada Tibet Lobby Days 2013  The Canada Tibet Committee has convened a unique coalition of Tibet groups in Canada in order to meet with MPs in Ottawa from March 4-8 and in constituencies from March 11-14.  The creation of a coalition responds to a request from the Central Tibetan Administration asking that Tibetans and Tibet supporters work more closely together. Documentary film about the preservation of Tibet’s culture receives support from Quebec’s Offices jeunesse internationaux The Offices jeunesse internationaux du Québec has provided financial support for a documentary film project directed by Eva Cirnu, coordinator of the CTC’s francophone section. The project, which is in the initial phase of production, looks at preservation of Tibet’s culture in exile. The film crew spent the month of January in Dharamsala after meeting and interviewing Tibetan communities across Canada over the past several months. In a context in which Tibet’s culture, arts and language are under threat, the diaspora communities are the best hope for keeping traditions alive. The project will document their efforts, celebrate their determination, and hopefully it will inspire Canadians to support their struggle. Malheureusement, au moment de la rédaction de cette lettre, le nombre des immolations a déjà grimpé à 104. Qu’est-ce qui est nécessaire pour que le monde réagisse? Le Comité Canada Tibet fait appel à nos représentants élus, à Ottawa, en organisant une initiative coordonnée de lobbying (http://www.tibet.ca/fr/newsroom/upcoming_events/193) et en facilitant une audience parlementaire. Un projet documentaire sur la préservation de la culture tibétaine reçoit l’appui des Offices jeunesse internationaux du Québec Les Offices jeunesse internationaux du Québec ont soutenu le projet de documentaire vidéo dirigé par Eva Cirnu, coordonnatrice du chapitre francophone du CCT. Le projet porte sur la préservation de la culture tibétaine en exil, et débute sa phase de montage actuellement. L’équipe du documentaire a passé un mois à Dharamsala, pour le tournage, après avoir suivi les activités de communautés tibétaines au Canada, pendant plusieurs mois. Dans le contexte où la culture, les arts et la langue tibétaines sont en péril au Tibet, l'exile demeure, pour les Tibétains, une des seules façons de vivre en liberté et de garder leur culture en vie.
