Last week, Rush Limbaugh suffered immense public backlash when he called Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown Law School student who testified before Congress, a "slut" and a "prostitute."1
Limbaugh's comments are an embodiment of the complete lack of respect he has for women and Sandra Fluke rightly called his statements "an attack on all women."2
But this week, news broke the that Missouri Speaker of the House Steven Tilley approved and commissioned a bust of Rush Limbaugh to go in the Hall of Famous Missourians in the Missouri Statehouse.3
Memorializing someone who is leading the war on women would be an affront to all Missourians.
Tell Speaker Tilley: Respect Missouri's women and stop the commission of the Rush Limbaugh bust for the Missouri Statehouse.
Unfortunately, what Rush Limbaugh says matters. He has a bigger audience than any other commercial radio host in the country, and what he talks about on air has the power to drive the Republican agenda -- an agenda that is already obsessed with radical assault on women's ability to protect their own health.4
Every American enjoys the right to free speech, but that doesn't mean that the Missouri legislature should pay tribute to and honor people like Rush Limbaugh who make such appallingly hateful and sexist comments.
Speaker Tilley needs to hear from us loud and clear -- if you honor Rush Limbaugh with a bust in the State Capitol, you are supporting his reprehensible attacks on women.
Tell Speaker Tilley: Respect Missouri's women and stop the commission of the Rush Limbaugh bust for the Missouri Statehouse.
Rush Limbaugh has a long history of hateful rhetoric. But with his comments last week, Rush Limbaugh has crossed the line at a moment when women, and the men who believe in equal rights for women, are more organized than ever and are ready to fight back.
We will not let the rightwing take away women's access to birth control. We will not let misogynists brand women who assert their right to health care as "sluts" and "prostitutes." And we will not let the Missouri Legislature pay tribute to someone who is one of the driving forces behind these radical attacks on women.
Tell Speaker Tilley: Respect Missouri's women and stop the commission of the Rush Limbaugh bust for the Missouri Statehouse
