DESCRIPTION

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks an Associate Editor to manage EurekAlert! Chinese, an online news service of AAAS, for the Office of Public Programs.

This is a full-time regular position anticipated to extend for a period of six months.

Major duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform daily proofing and editing of materials, both in Chinese and in English, for the EurekAlert! Chinese website, in conformance with established style guidelines, reorganizing, cutting, or rewriting material as necessary
  • Accurately and consistently provide editorial review and control of the EurekAlert! Chinese website
  • Manage projects related to the promotion and maintenance of EurekAlert! Chinese
  • Coordinate with the EurekAlert! Chinese Marketing Associate and EurekAlert! Publication Assistants to help post news releases, multimedia, and other materials to the EurekAlert! Chinese website
  • Manage relationships with consultants and translators in China and the US
  • Select and match consultants, negotiate changes as needed, communicate with authors as necessary, and maintain a network of potential editorial reviewers
  • Develop timetables for editorial and production activities to ensure that deadlines are met
  • Research and write grant proposals for the development and expansion of EurekAlert! Chinese
  • Write new content for EurekAlert! Chinese
  • Coordinating with the EurekAlert! Chinese Marketing Associate to manage relationships with EurekAlert! Chinese subscribers

Minimum qualifications:

  • Extensive university or college level training leading to a Bachelor's degree (communications or journalism preferred)
  • Three to five years of related editing and writing experience (scientific, publishing, or academic environment preferred)
  • Fluency in standard written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Chinese and English
  • Ability to work constructively as a member of a team
  • Strong organizational skills, proactive and detail-oriented, and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of HTML preferred
