More Rumors: 7.85-inch iPad, Apple TV Set
By Jim Karpen
Apple develops prototypes when it's exploring a new product. A prototype doesn't necessarily guarantee that they'll eventually bring the device to market. But it does show that Apple is seriously considering it. And the most recent rumors of a 7.85-inch iPad prototype show that Apple does indeed seem to be considering such a device.AppleInsider and many other blogs are reporting that during an episode of The Talk Show, Apple enthusiast John Gruber said that Apple has a 7.85-inch iPad in its lab for testing.

WiFi, 3G Issues with New iPad
By Jim Karpen
While problems with the new iPad aren't widespread, there do seem to be a couple issues cropping up with some of them. 9To5Mac is reporting that Apple is actively investigating a WiFi problem on the new iPad that seems to exclusively affact the WiFi-only models. Problems include dropped connections, slow dowload and upload speeds, and difficulty making a connection. Many of those reporting the issues used previous models of the iPad with no problem, so the fault clearly seems to be with the new model.

iPhone 4S to Launch with 5 Additional Regional U.S. Carriers on April 20
By Jim Karpen
One of the reasons that Apple is doing so well financially is that the iPhone 4S, which was released last October, still has a lot of momentum. And now five additional regional carriers in the U.S. will start offering the iPhone on April 20. Oddly, they'll be selling both the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 for $50 less than the other carriers, starting at $150 and $50, respectively. In addition, the GSM carrier in the bunch will also likely offer the iPhone 3GS.

The Ups and Downs of iPhoto on iOS
I’ve been looking for a single app to be the photo editing kit on my iPhone and iPad, and – to my surprise – iPhoto might just be that app. There’s definitely quite a learning curve to iPhoto on iOS, but I really like how the app focuses more on slider controls than quick-fix presets. I don’t have anything against apps like Instagram and PhotoToaster (I think they’re great, actually), but there are just a few too many app candidates out there that are overly eager to head butt me right out of the photo editing process.

AT&T to Begin Unlocking Off-contract iPhones April 8
AT&T confirmed today that it will unlock customer's iPhones starting Sunday, April 8. AT&T told Engadget, Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer's account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee. This is good news for customers who travel abroad. When they reach their destination, customers will be able to purchase a less-expensive SIM from a local carrier, instead of subscribing to an AT&T international plan.

Trip Pages Lets You Save and Share Memorable Places
Whether you are taking a trip to your local museum or a trip around the world, there will be moments that you'll want to remember. Trip Pages from Studeo410 lets you capture that moment with a picture, a note and relevant location information. The first thing I noticed about Trip Pages is its pleasing, yet technical looking interface. The app launches with a screen that shows a compass with your heading, GPS co-ordinates, speed and weather. It even displays your elevation based on your GPS location.

iMindMap HD
Buzan Online Limited, Free with in app purchases
by Daniel Rasmus

I like to Mindmap. I organize my life, my writing and my projects with mindmaps. And ThinkBuzan, the software arm of mindmap inventor Tony Buzan, has just released what may be the ultimate experience for mind mappers: iMindMap Freedom. Before Freedom, iMindMap was an OK app on iOS and a pretty substaintial authoring environment on the Mac and PC.

The new apps is pretty to work with and elegant in its UI design. Buzan sees the process of brainstorming as a visual, artistic one, and no other mindmapping tool captures his vision like his own product. Not only is the UI design elegant, but the fluidity of idea capture makes most notetaking applications appear downright awkward.

Buzan clearly recognized that the iOS platform isn't a PC, and adjusted the visuals to account for the small surface space, while maintaining a familiarity for those steeped in the full client versions of the apps (note the blue and red half-circles in the illustrations that denote moving the branch or creating a new branch).

All of those mindmapping experiences now connect through the Freedom service. For the introductory price of $13.99 a year, maps from all devices synchronize, and can be edited, from a central repository of mindmaps. And if you find yourself deviceless, a new browser-based editor will keep the idea capture flowing. A free service allows for up to five synchronnized maps and a handful of syncs a day. For heavy use, you will need to lay down the $13.99.

The Freedom service, however, concerns me a bit, because it is yet another cloud.

If you aren't aware, there isn't "a cloud" there are many clouds, and they don't talk to each other. Most of my day-to-day files have migrated to Dropbox, which runs on everything from a PC to an Android phone (and all Macs and iOS devices inbetween).  And of course there is iCloud. But Apple's cloud is only made for Apple stuff. Apple's iOS apps, for instance, can't access images stored in Dropbox, only those in Photostream. And if you store content in Google, that isn't accessible either, except through Google apps. And in this case, iMindMapHD, on iOS, won't connect with Dropbox or Google or iCloud.

Some third-party apps, like iThoughtsHD, another mindmapping app for iOS, stores its files locally or in Dropbox, or a numner of other more open storage locations. iThoughtsHD app doesn't pin you down to its own service.

The extensive export capabilities and other business features of iThoughtsHD will keep me conflicted for awhile, but overall I like the new iMindMap HD and the direction of all of the Buzan-inspired clients. I'll have more on the service and a deeper review integrated with other mindmapping tools soon.  In the meantime, free is free. If you like mindmapping, take a look at iMindMap HD and see if it fits your idea capture style.

Tip of the Week

Don’t Let Siri Access Your Locked iPhone

When you hold down the Home button for a couple of seconds, Siri will be activated and wait for your request. However, this works even if the iPhone is locked, which means someone could potentially use your iPhone to make calls, send emails, or text. It’s not all bad, though. They will be limited to the people in your Contacts, and they won’t be able to open any apps (Siri doesn’t do that). However, if you would rather not give strangers the power of contacting people from your locked phone, simply go to Settings> General> Passcode Lock and slide the Siri setting to OFF.
